Confidence is a great quality to have. A confident individual eludes assurance and often builds trust naturally with people. Their level-headed approach in times of crisis and decision-making can be very uplifting, too!

Developing confidence takes time and conscious effort, so it will be advantageous to start at a young age. As parents, you can nurture your child and plant seeds of confidence today!

Here are some pointers to teach a child to build confidence:

  1. Take pride in your own merits. To be confident with what you do, you have to be comfortable with who you are. Every child has unique gifts and talents, and it is best to focus on their strengths and celebrate every milestone.
  2. Say "yes" only when you mean it. Just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should. A confident person knows that if an action is not aligned with their values and beliefs, they can simply refuse. Teach your child to commit only to things they know is right and noble, and do their best thereafter. When in doubt, simply ask!
  3. There is strength in silence. Confidence is not displayed merely through words. Knowing when to actively listen and pay attention is a habit that allows individuals to gain understanding, learn and grow. Have your children focus on the person and conversation instead of rushing an answer.
  4. It's okay to make mistakes. Confident people understand their abilities and limitations. They are open to learning and making mistakes. When your child gets called out, let them know that it is not an attack towards their personhood, but a way of identifying an area that they can work on.
  5. Ask for help when you need it. Asking for help does not equate to weakness. It is okay to seek help! Partnering with others to accomplish a task is a good way to expand your horizon and mind.
Having a humble yet high value of self is truly a boon. In a world that sometimes can be so unforgiving, being confident and standing your ground will enable you to stay on the path you've chosen! Give the gift of confidence to your children because it will make a world of difference to them.
