Coping with Miscarriage

The birth of a child is a momentous event that couples prepare for and look forward to. However, it’s unfortunate that, even with faith and hard work, some women had to experience the physical and emotional pain from an unsuccessful delivery. How can a couple pick up the pieces when their bundle of joy becomes a bundle of sadness?

Understanding Marriage

According to Stanford Children’s Health, a miscarriage is defined as pregnancy lost before 20 weeks. Statistics show that there is a one-in-five chance for expecting women to suffer from miscarriage, which happens mostly before 12 weeks gestation. Contrary to myths surrounding miscarriage, everyday activities such as exercising, working, or having sex are not to blame. This is usually attributed to genetic abnormalities that prevent the fetus from developing as it should.

Saying Goodbye, Your Way

The first step to healing is to accept the loss of the child. This will be hard especially for those who had to try several times over the years for an opportunity to become parents.

For women who experienced miscarriage, it is important to remember that it is normal for feelings to be erratic at first. Welcome the comfort that your family offers, and seek out those who share the same story as yours. Join a support group that can provide advice through experience on how to get over the sorrow of losing a child. If the pain persists, you can also consult with a mental health counselor or therapist.

Moving Forward, Together

It may be the woman who experienced miscarriage first-hand, but her spouse is by no means less affected by the incident. Instead of dealing with the grief separately, couples should try their best to open up and share their feelings with each other.

If his wife is taking her time to process their loss, the husband can show how much he cares by doing little yet impactful things to keep the household running. This can include watching over their other children in her stead, doing the grocery, or even preparing a special dinner where he and his wife could bond like they used to.

Finding the Will to Try, Again

If having a baby is a dream that you wish to be fulfilled, wait until you are ready physically and emotionally before attempting pregnancy. Coordinate closely with a trusted health care provider, and go through medical tests to ascertain the cause of your miscarriage. We may never get back what was taken, but we can summon the courage to get back up for another shot at happiness.
